Ankylosing Spondylitis

//Ankylosing Spondylitis

What is?

It is a chronic inflammatory disease, a subtype of rheumatoid arthritis, that affects the spine and more specifically the facets joints and the ligaments (ossification – bamboo spine).

Primary Stage
Final stage

Most of the patients develop osteoporosis too. As a result, the spine loses its flexibility and durability and highly unstable fractures may occur at the lower cervical or lower thoracic spine, even after minor trauma.

Thoracic spine
Cervical spine

The treatment of the fractures is usually surgical. The surgical approach is either posterior or a combination of anterior and posterior approaches and instrumentation at least two vertebra above and below the fracture level.
