X-ray of osteoporotic fractures
Osteoporosis is a condition of bone fragility due to low bone density and microarchitectural deterioration. As a result, the vertebral bodies may undergo compression fractures after even minimal force.
These fractures might be asymptomatic or pain and rarely neurologic impairment may be present.
The treatment is conservative or surgical. The former includes analgesics, bed rest and external bracing. Concerning the surgical treatment, the percutaneous vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty with or (more commonly) without any other instrumentation is recommended.
The goals of the surgery are to relief the pain to early mobilize the patient.
