They are classified in three groups depending on their location:
1. Extradural: those who arise in vertebrae or epidural tissues (primary or metastatic).
2. Intradural-extramedullary, such as meningiomas and neurofibromas.
3. Intramedullary, such as astrocytomas and ependymomas.
The symptoms vary from a simple pain to severe neurological impairment, depending on the size of the tumor and its location.
The treatment is usually a combination of surgery (tumor removal, decompression of the neural elements, stabilization of the spine), radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.
