The patient is placed in a knee-chest position and a c-arm is used to find the right level. Then a small incision, approximately 2-2,5 cm., is made and using special dilators, microscope and microsurgical instrumentation, the surgeon locates the affected nerve.
The nerve root is then gently mobilized and the disc material is the removed.
The patient is usually mobilized a few hours after the surgery and the nest day is discharged home.
It is of paramount importance to state, that microdiscectomy is a procedure to decompress a nerve root and it is not at all indicated when there is evidence of spinal instability or structural damage (ex. Spondylolisthesis, severe low back pain).
